ARRIS help Titus Salt School launch GCSE Engineering course with exciting challenge

To help Titus Salt School in Bradford launch their brand new GCSE Engineering course in September 2018, global leader in entertainment, communications and networking technology ARRIS based in Saltaire challenged 22 of their students to an immersive Consumer Electronics Challenge.

Five product engineers from ARRIS asked Year 9 students to specify, design and promote a Consumer Electronics product for the domestic market to fulfil a need that they identified within the home. The group took a tour of the Arris site production facilities as well as an introduction to the company and Product Lifecycle workshop to launch the challenge.

Mentored by Year 12 students, they then had time in school to work on their ideas. Product engineers from ARRIS paid an interim visit to the students at the school to assess and approve their invention ideas; and the students presented their final work, to a panel from ARRIS using the Product Lifecycle as a framework. 

The judges selected HUME as the winner which measures humidity in the home and enables adjustments to heating and airing to be made, which is especially important to people with COPD and other conditions.

David Robinson, Product Manager as ARRIS, said: "The commitment from the students and enthusiasm of the school made this challenge a fantastic success. Being able to bring our team at ARRIS together to give students a more in-depth look at how we design and manufacture our products was really inspiring for them and us."

Stuart Green, STEM Leader at Titus Salt School, said: "Linking with this local engineering company and using their expertise to guide the pupils has been really worthwhile. All the students involved significantly improved their awareness of how their skills link to the world of work, speaking and listening skills, confidence and aspirations through this project and working with Ahead Partnership certainly improves opportunities for our students."
